Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on the 9th of August, 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singing star Dionne Warwick. The mother of Whitney Houston and her daughter began to sing professionally together at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark in the year Whitney was just fifteen years old. They performed the back vocals in Chaka Khan's track in 1978 Im Every Woman. Later, she provided backing vocals to Jermaine Jackson and Lou Rawls and her mother. The quality of her work as the lead vocalist in New York funk group Material attracted the attention of several major record companies including Arista who she signed in 1982 and was with them for the rest of her life.
