In the year 2017 Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it became the highest-streamed hit song that time, within just one year. It combines reggaeton and pop that was not just a new ear to reggaeton music, but also the popularity of Latin music. Billboard's Top 100 featured two songs which were Spanish mainly, and 4 more songs in the year the year 2016. When Despacito was at its height, the band's popularity in 2017, 19 songs that were mainly written in Spanish reached into the Top 100. This figure grew to 41 in 2020. When Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, well-known artists began collaborating with reggaeton performers. Drake and Bad Bunny worked together to record MIA (2018) in addition to Madonna and Maluma collaborated on Medellin, 2019 By 2020 a few reggaeton stars were complaining about the genre's direction toward the mainstream but a new generation namely Rauw Alejandro wanted to keep reggaeton evolving. It often blended elements from electronic dance music, and various other styles.
